Tips and Guidelines – Shopping For The Home

Do you often find yourself throwing foodstuff gone bad into the dust bin, and giving away unused things like cosmetics and clothes, to make place for more that enters the home with you?

Think rationally about what this implies -that you are spending dollars in tens and hundreds just because you see things and simply buy them and not because they form part of your list or have any immediate need for.

Every month hundreds of dollars must be going waste, the refrigerator and all your cupboards will be bursting at the seams and soon your bags full of shopped goods will be spilling on the living room floor. It is time this came to a stop and good sense prevails about how you must shop to run a home and have everything you may need.

The steps listed below will still keep you well dressed and well turned out, you will still have great food to eat, your home will look de-cluttered and better than ever before, and the only new feature in your life will be that nothing will be wasted and thrown into the dustbin and you will find yourself referring to a shopping list and somehow gathering the courage to walk away from all tempting offers in departmental stores and supermarkets. Extremely Heavy Delivery Schedule For 30th Jan 2010

We are experiencing an overload of deliveries for tomorrow, 30/01/10. The deliveries are exceeding 56 locations, with more than 150 items to be fulfilled in 1 single day!

We have already pushed back / post-poned a portion of the deliveries, and we are still left with more than 56 locations to fulfill. (originally we had more than 70). We had been frantically sourcing for additional resources to help with the delivery the past few days for tomorrow’s delivery, and we managed to get 2 more lorries and 5 more helpers. So in total, we will have 4 lorries and 10 people to complete the deliveries tomorrow.

But, given the sheer volume of items to be delivered (more than 150 items), just 1 error in any of the 56 deliveries will potentially mess up the entire delivery schedule.

It’s the first time we are having so many deliveries one day since we started out in 2006, all of us are very excited, but also worried about unforeseen hiccups that may delay everyone’s schedule tomorrow.

So….. we would like to seek your understanding and patience, in advance, should there be any unforeseen circumstances that might cause your delivery tomorrow to be late.

Be assured that we are all doing best to make sure the goods are delivered on time, we will monitor the delivery situation closely. Our delivery hotline (96575729) might be jammed too, so if you are calling to enquire about the delivery, you may also call this additional number 6789 9927.

At the same time we want to let all of our customers know that we appreciate the support over the years. The repeat customers, we know who you are, and we really appreciate it. For those who are first time buyers, we thank you for giving us a chance. We will do all we can and at our best to make sure your purchase is a pleasant one.

God bless everyone! :)

Some Truth About Sleep

Sweet dreamsSleep is as important for the human body as food and water. However, here are many misconceptions about sleep. It is important to give some serious thought to sleep and not just believe what is said.

Sleep is important for good health but its requirement varies according to the individual. The only thing in common is that everyone needs to sleep for at least 6 hours a day to recharge and let the body relax before starting to work all over again.

Many myths are based on generalizations like everyone needing at least eight hours of sleep, while actually sleep requirements vary, or that sleeping more is better than less sleep. Unfortunately, sleeping more is an indication that something is amiss and the body is facing some sickness.

The HDB townships give insights into life in Singapore. With the idea of providing shelter to all so that there are no homeless in the city, HDB came up with the first township at Queenstown. Though this was constructed by Housing Development Board’s predecessor, namely the Singapore Improvement Trust, this was a pilot project designed to taste the success and public acceptance of this housing exercise. Built more with the need to provide a home to all, the accommodation offered was basic and frill-free.

Affluence and the gradual elevation in living standards made the Board realize that better, aesthetically appealing and more sophisticated homes were needed, hence each successive project was an improvement on the previous one. Constant upgrading of existing townships and buildings keeps all residential buildings in an excellent state. The upgrading exercise could be an addition of a room or a balcony Click to Continue Reading

Mattress For Horse Racing Addicts

It has been a long time since I received a marketing email made me LOL. I categorize all marketing emails as spam unless I have dealt with the company before. I usually delete all unsolicitated marketing emails without reading. Yesterday, by chance I happen to read an marketing email from “Punters Way”, you know that little book that “ah peks” carry around especially during weekends around Kranji area.

Apparently, the sales guy did some research before sending out these marketing emails. He knew that Beds.sg was selling mattress (well done!), and what’s interesting was that he managed to reason/conclude that the “ah peks” in Kranji was a viable target audience for us and we should spend some money marketing to them. Mattresses for horse racing gamblers, wow!

Below is the screenshot of the email, I have blurred the original email address to protect his privacy.

Yes, the message was cute, but no, I am not going to advertise with them.

What Everybody Ought to Know About Mattress Care

Mattress care is neither cumbersome nor time consuming. It can simply become part of the regular cleaning regimen followed at home. The initial phase makes it appear like an added headache, but soon it blends into the household routine. All that mattresses need to be able to last long and well are a few simple measures like:

1) Place the mattress on a strong, firm base. This ensures that the mattress remains unshaken and does not sag with the curve of a base that cannot withstand the weight of the mattress.

2) The new mattress must be allowed to breathe for sometime after it has been removed from its plastic wrapping. This helps in removing the odor of newness that is typically found in foam products encased in plastic sheets for sometime.

3) Before being installed on the bed a washable, absorbent cover must be placed over the mattress. This will keep the mattress permanently clean and any spilling or stains will soil the cover and not the mattress. The cover being removable can be washed and placed again.

4) The mattress of even the finest quality like latex or memory foam must be flipped occasionally. This will help preserve its evenness on top and the whole mattress will stay firm.

5) Regular dusting and weekly vacuum cleaning of the mattress is recommended to prevent dust from settling on it. This will also ensure that dust mites never enter the mattress.

6) Mattresses must be free from moisture and therefore wet things must never be placed on them.
Mattresses do tend to absorb moisture during seasons when humidity levels are high. This may lead to fungal growths and discoloring. The best preventive for this is sunlight. Therefore, the mattresses must be kept under direct sunlight once a month or more if it is not too cumbersome a task. This will extract all the moisture and also kill any germs present.

7) While water must be avoided on mattresses any stains appearing on the mattress can be cleaned with mild but effective detergent and then cleaned with a wet cloth. This will keep the mattress spotlessly clean for years to come. The only word of caution here is that any wet exposure to the bed must be followed by proper drying to remove all traces of moisture from the mattress.

8) Mattresses may seem solid and tough but they serve a specific purpose of providing restful sleep. They must not be used as play areas or trampolines to be jumped on or as bouncing pads. This would damage the inner layers of the mattress and shorten their life.

9) Mattresses are meant to be stored flat and must never be folded, since folding will compress the inner layers and stretch the outer ones, causing irreparable damage.

Beds and Mattress Sale

Is Beds.sg having a Sale?

Wait… I will come to that later

Every day (especially weekends), when I open the newspaper, I come across huge advertisments splashed over the newspapers with big titles like “Giant Sale! Up to 80% off Beds and Mattress”. Then the advertisements are usually followed by some details like

“**** Mattress, Usual price : $1,500, Now Special Price $499”

or something like

Queen Size Beds Starting from $99!

Wow! Should we just drop everything down and rush to their shop and buy? Well, at least the “creative person” who came out with the advertisements would think so….

You see, the problem of these advertisements is that they are there every week! From the same few companies.

Now the question is, are they still making a profit if they sell a $1,500 mattress at $499?

If yes, then what kind of profit margin are they enjoying when they are not on sale? You do the maths.

If no, then why would they have everything on sale every week? And spend tens of thousands of dollars on advertisement every month?

You know, alot of my customers ask me this question before purchasing from us “Are you sure delivery is free? There are no GST charges right? No hidden cost?”  Even though, it is stated very clearly in our site that we don’t charge delivery and GST, the questions keep coming.

Then, I realized that these customers had some bad experience purchasing from some furniture stores (the same ones that advertise every week) The problem is like this

–  the advertisment will state that (for example) a Queen Size Bed is having a special promo at $99
–  When the customer is about to purchase, then, they realize that the price of $99, does not include a $50 delivery charge (some charge up to $80 for delivery) and a 7% GST, charge and that will come up to $160.

I sometimes just wonder, at this time and age, do they really think such tactics would would work? Maybe in the 1980s but definately not now. Consumers now so smart that they can sniff out a gimmick in less than a second.

Well, back to the Beds.sg Sale, are we having a Sale?

Not really a sale….., but we will be giving a discount if you blog about us
Really? How much?

Yes, really. $15

What? That’s peanuts!

Yes, that’s not a fortune, I agree. But that’s a lot to us, we work on minimum mark-up and believe it or not, we sometimes don’t even make a profit on some of our products. But again, think about it, $15 is equilevant to 2 movie tickets on a weekday, a taxi ride from Jurong East to Orchard Road,  a copy of Air Supply’s All-time’s Best CD…….

Ok, whatever……… so how do I get my $15 discount?

After purchasing with us, simply write a blog post of 150 words on your shopping experience with beds.sg and we will mail you a cheque of $15.

What if I don’t have a blog?

Create one. It takes less than a 3 minutes to do it. For more details, please see this page Beds.sg Rebate

Free Mattress Program, The Story Behind

During the initial launch of Beds.sg, 2 years ago, our company infrastructure wasn’t that stable yet. Every now and then, there will be hiccups here and there with our delivery team. As a result, I was spending at least 2 days per week helping out the delivery team. Yes, physically delivering the mattresses and beds myself. And, yes… it is tough work

But, well… I learnt alot.

As you might know, if you purchased from us before, we provide free mattress disposal service. In other words, when you buy a mattress from us, we will help you dispose your old one. And, this is where the whole story begins….

A good number of mattress I (physically) dispose of were full of bed bugs. I testify that bed bugs are one of the most digusting things on this planet. The mattresses that were infected by bed bugs have a really bad smell, they produce a kind of odour. I can’t really describe the smell but it is a basically a mixture of dried blood combined with faeces from the bed bugs. Anyway, the point is…. it is just plain gross.

A lot of mattress, which I dispose during that time were badly deformed and out of shape. Some even had springs poking out.

Then, it dawned unto me that might be extremely poor people around who are using this kind of mattresses and are unable to afford new ones. Look at the prices at mattresses out there, it cost minimum a few hundred to thousands of dollars.

I am sure, my fellow Singaporeans, you have seen on TV or knew people who are so poor that sometimes they rather skip a meal to set aside money for their rent or for their childrens school fees or for the medical fees of their loved ones. Now, tell me, how the hell are they going to afford a new mattress?

The irony of all, an unhygenic mattress will cause them to be ill more often, then, on top of their already very bad situation, they probably have to skip seeing the doctor. Or skip more meals because they can’t go to work. You get what I am driving at? The poor gets poorer so as the saying goes…..

How about the ederly in our country, a number of them who are depending social welfare, you think they got the money to get a new mattress? I once delivered a mattress to an elderly gentleman whom stays alone, the mattress was ordered by his son who stays elswhere. The mattress the elderly was sleeping on was unusable, disgusting to the max. Any strong healthy person sleeping on that mattress will get sick! Now, my point is, this elderly guy had a son, his son bought him a new mattress, how about those that do not have children who cares for them? You get my point?

Free Mattress Program

We can’t help everyone, but we will try to help as many as we could. Thus, we decided to launch the “Free Mattress Program”

You can view the full details here, Free Mattress Program. But in short, this is how it goes.

We will give away one mattress every week for as long as we can afford. The mattress given away would either Single, Super Single or Queen Size, depending on the requirement of the individual. It will be a brand new mattress.

To apply for the “Free Mattress Program”, fill up the form with all the fields required . We will review all the applicants, do background checks and choose the successful applicant base on who needs the mattress most.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that most of the people needing the mattress will not be internet savvy and wouldn’t be able to apply for this program themselves. We will depend mostly on referrals to keep this program successful. So, this is where we need your help – If you do come across anyone who you think will benefit from this program, please fill up the same form found here, Free Mattress Program.

I will empahsis strongly here : This program is for Singapore’s poor and needy. This is a Charity program. Do not spam us with fake stories. We cannot afford to spend time trying to sort out the the non-genuine cases from the genuine ones, if anyone starts spamming us with fake applicants, this program will fail.

So let’s do our part to help make Singapore a better place.

I believe most of us have heard of memory foam mattress, but what actually is memory foam? What is it made of? Where did it originate from? What are the actual benefits? Who sells them? How much does one cost? Read on to find out…..

Memory foam mattresses, better known as Visco-elastic mattresses has brought in a revolution in the technology adopted by mattresses. These memory foam mattresses mold according the shape and weight placed on the bed with a unique feature of memorizing its previous shape.

Memory foam mattresses have gained immense popularity owing to their exceptional features of adjusting themselves as per the comfort of the person hitting the bed, thereby relieving him of unwanted pressure on his joints and body parts. 5 Facts you should know about sleep and fitness

Sleep affects our health. This is a fact that we all know.

Lack of sleep will affect our concentration, resulting in mistakes in work. And also cause a hazard if we travel on the road frequently.

You can stay fit and healthy by exercising and keeping a proper diet. But, do you know that lack of sleep will ruin our fitness plan and deem all our hard work in exercising futile?

We are honored to have Mr. Winston Liow, an established personal trainer of more than 10 years to contribute an article on this subject.

Mr. Liow suggested in this article that for those who are frequent visitors to the gym, if you are not getting enough quality sleep, you will soon find your gym membership fees gone to drain.

The article is titled Sleep and Fitness.

If you are not getting a good night’s sleep,  is it because the mattress too old or too soft? Is the pillow too flat? did you had caffeine earlier? Find out and change what you can, because sleep affects us in more ways that we can imagine.
