10th Mattress Given Under Free Mattress Program

We have just given away our 10th mattress under the “Free Mattress Program” to a single parent of 2 teenage kids, whose mattress are infected by bedbugs and could not afford to buy one.

Below, is the story of the applicant

“I’m a single parent with 2 growing up kids and working as a executive in an institute. My take home salary after CPF deduction is $1,356 only. My daughter, 19 years old has been trying to look for job but to no avail and my son, 18 years old is still studying in ITE. Its very difficult to make ends meet with such a take home salary. Recently I discover there’s bed bugs on my bed and have sprayed insecticides as recommended by some friends but it don’t really help. Just yesterday I discover that the head board is infested with it too. So, immediate with my son’s help we get rid the head board. 2 hours later we still saw some bed bugs coming out from the mattress too. Now I’m so scared to sleep on my bed and instead I sleep on the floor”

8th and 9th Mattress Given Under Free Mattress Program

We made an exception this week, 2 mattresses were given to a family this week. This family was referred to us by a welfare worker from Singapore’s Children Society. Give their current situation, we agreed internally to give them 2 mattresses. Below is the brief story:

“Mr XXX is married with 4 children, ages from 6 to 17 years old. All of his children are still in school. Mr. XXX had been retrenched and is having difficulty finding another job. Wife is the main breadwinner, earning $820 per month as a cleaner. Family has several arrears with HDB and utility bills and is struggling to survive on wife’s only source of income.

Family was previously relying on Mr. XXX’s savings to meet their daily needs, but his savings has since depleted. During a recent home visit, I noted that children’s room has no mattress, and they have to make do with a thin comforter to sleep on.

Mr. XXX shared that he had recently thrown out the old mattresses as there were many bed bugs on them. Family is currently receiving assistance from Singapore Children Society Family Service Centre (Yishun) to ensure that children’s schooling needs are met. The mattress would go a long way to ensure that the children have a proper bed to sleep on. ”

Once again, I urge anyone who encounters such families to apply for the Free Mattress Program on their behalf. The application form can be found in http://www.beds.sg/fmp.asp

6th Mattress Given Under Free Mattress

Free Mattress Program Update

We have given away the 6th mattress under our Free Mattress Program. The following is the story of the recipient :

I am 49 years old, I saw your news article on “My Paper” regarding the “Free mattresses for the needy” and so I would like to be granted with one of those beds due to the financial difficulties I am facing at the moment.

I have lost my job recently and have been finding another job. However due to my age and the current recession period, getting another job is tough. Having a family of 5, including myself, financial management is becoming harder.

My wife 45, is a housewife taking care of my daughter age 7, who is schooling in special school. My younger son, 19 is studying at Republic Polytechnic.

Currently, my bed I am sleeping on is not in a very good condition. The bed has stains of my daughter’s urine and so I like to have a change of bed as the bed has last for over 20 years.

Reading through the essay, I hope, should have given the insight of my situation and difficulties my family and I are financially. I appreciate if you will to grant me with the bed. Thank you.”

5th Mattress Given Under Free Mattress Program

We have just given away the 5th mattress under the free mattress program. This week we had a mini spike in applications, mainly due to the news coverage by mypaper.

For the rest of the applicants who were not selected for this week will be reconsidered for next week’s free mattress program.

Below is the story of this week’s applicant :

i just came out of prison on 29 July 2009 after serving 3 year 5 months jail term for drug related offences.I am 25 yrs old and just got employed as an admin.I have changed since then and have become a christian.

My mother is a 53 yrs old diabetic and requires Insulin injection 3 times a day so she is physically not well to work so i am supporting her and paying for the rental house from HDB. I have a sister w hom is unemployed and looking for a job,she is married with two kids and her husband is in prison.

As i was just released and do not have any savings i am financially not stable and have to seek the SANA for transportation expenses. My mum is seeking help with CDC and my sister two kids are with her mother-in-law,they come every weekend to stay. Before my incarceration we did not have a house that time, i left my things in a warehouse. I found out that they auctioned of my things and all my possessions were gone.

Currently, 3 of us are sleeping on a broken mattress and it really hurts my mum back. At night she would wake up and complain about backaches and i felt really helpless during those moments. She really needs something comfortable to sleep on and for now i cannot provide such needs.

Today when i read about your programme in the my paper and thought it would really be a great help for my family especially my mother. I hope you will consider my application as it would lighten my load of responsibilities.”

Fourth Mattress Given Under Free Mattress Program

Free Mattress Program update.

We have given away the fourth mattress under the Free Mattress Program. This time round we had coverage from mypaper aka “wo bao”, the coverage would be published within the next few days. So, if you are interested in getting the full story, grab the next few issues of mypaper.

In brief, the following is the story of the recipient:

“My husband is the sole breadwinner in our family of seven (my husband 35 years old, me 31 years old, my mother-in-law 59 years old and my four kids 8-13 years old). He earns less than $1,500 a month. Its depressing to see him working so hard and unable to sleep properly on our dilapidated, old queen size matress. He wakes up daily aching all over but he still have to work. We need to have a new matress but we just can’t afford it. My four kids sleeps on the floor since we can’t afford any bed space for them in the 3-room flat we are staying in. “

First Mattress Given Under Free Mattress Program

We have given away our first mattress under our Free Mattress Program. We had 7 applicants since the launch of the program on the 20th July. The applicants who were not selected could reapply for next week’s free mattress.

I would like to thank all those who had helped this program. You will be glad to know that at least 1 Singaporean’s life would be better every week…..

I would also like to thank the person who had applied on the applicant’s behalf.

Below is the applicant’s story, through the words of his friend. (I had changed the names, as I do not wish any uneccessary inconvenience brought to the applicant through this program)

Dear beds.sg, I am applying for a chance to give my friend, John Lee, an opportunity to have a better living condition.

Background of John Lee and his family: He is soon to be 21st on 30th August. Currently serving full-time NS, he only gets pathetic allowance from the SAF and still has a long way till ORD in Sep-2010. His mom passed away, leaving him with his ageing dad and an elder brother. His dad and brother were not employed currently, with his dad staying in the 3-room flat (2 bedrooms + 1 living room) most of the time.

Current situation: John was very reluctant to invite people to his house. I am considered the “lucky” few to have stepped in. I took the chance on CNY when i said that i wanted to pay a visit to his dad. He agreed. To my horror (actually he already told me his house was in a mess before i went), never did i expect that it could be 100X worst than i thought.

His house was TOTALLY overwhelmed with piles and piles of poster rolls stacked up in his house. I was dumbfounded and instantly went into a state of shock the moment he opened the door. The living room was left with a very small walkway leading to his bedroom. That’s not the end. His room and kitchen was filled with those things too!! Horrendous. Needless to say, his whole house was filled with a stench, but i never had the courage to tell him that his house reeks.

The problem is, if this is sort of House Makeover Show by Mediacorp, John could probably have a high chance of getting it. But as a friend of his, i really wish that he could at least have a basic, nice and comfortable bed to sleep on every night when he book out from NS.

John’s room was shared with his brother. Right now, he sleeps on a small Di-Lum that is laid on the floor, while his brother takes the .. filthy bed. Speaking of those “stuffs”, they were brought home by his brother and left in the house, accumulating throughout the years. I really pity John. I once asked him to tell his brother to throw away those stuffs, but he said those are not his and he couldn’t do anything about it.

The other room used by his dad was kind of ajar that day. His dad didn’t want me to peek into it. He was too embarrassed i guessed. It was all his brother’s doings that made the whole house into such state. I believe neither John nor his dad could talk his brother out.

Ending Statement: What i wish for here, as a friend of John, to let him have a bed of his, or a mattress so he won’t have to sleep on Di Lums anymore. At least once he gets a brand new bed/mattress, he and his family could do a bit of spring cleaning and can finally have a sound sleep at night.

I really cannot believe John is living in such a condition. I have NEVER come across someone’s house that is so so so bad, until i saw his. His friend Jane Tan could probably verify my statement although i have no idea who she is. Her contacts was provided by John.

I found this website while surfing and decided to give it a shot. I have actually consulted John’s permission before participating but i did not show him my submission. I also understand that beds.sg is only giving out free mattress for awarded applicants. Perhaps a plan can be made if he is really chosen.

His house is totally in a mess. But it may require alot of work for them. I am not asking for much. For John, or for his 21st birthday gift, i hope i have done my part. Thank you.

Free Mattress Program, The Story Behind

During the initial launch of Beds.sg, 2 years ago, our company infrastructure wasn’t that stable yet. Every now and then, there will be hiccups here and there with our delivery team. As a result, I was spending at least 2 days per week helping out the delivery team. Yes, physically delivering the mattresses and beds myself. And, yes… it is tough work

But, well… I learnt alot.

As you might know, if you purchased from us before, we provide free mattress disposal service. In other words, when you buy a mattress from us, we will help you dispose your old one. And, this is where the whole story begins….

A good number of mattress I (physically) dispose of were full of bed bugs. I testify that bed bugs are one of the most digusting things on this planet. The mattresses that were infected by bed bugs have a really bad smell, they produce a kind of odour. I can’t really describe the smell but it is a basically a mixture of dried blood combined with faeces from the bed bugs. Anyway, the point is…. it is just plain gross.

A lot of mattress, which I dispose during that time were badly deformed and out of shape. Some even had springs poking out.

Then, it dawned unto me that might be extremely poor people around who are using this kind of mattresses and are unable to afford new ones. Look at the prices at mattresses out there, it cost minimum a few hundred to thousands of dollars.

I am sure, my fellow Singaporeans, you have seen on TV or knew people who are so poor that sometimes they rather skip a meal to set aside money for their rent or for their childrens school fees or for the medical fees of their loved ones. Now, tell me, how the hell are they going to afford a new mattress?

The irony of all, an unhygenic mattress will cause them to be ill more often, then, on top of their already very bad situation, they probably have to skip seeing the doctor. Or skip more meals because they can’t go to work. You get what I am driving at? The poor gets poorer so as the saying goes…..

How about the ederly in our country, a number of them who are depending social welfare, you think they got the money to get a new mattress? I once delivered a mattress to an elderly gentleman whom stays alone, the mattress was ordered by his son who stays elswhere. The mattress the elderly was sleeping on was unusable, disgusting to the max. Any strong healthy person sleeping on that mattress will get sick! Now, my point is, this elderly guy had a son, his son bought him a new mattress, how about those that do not have children who cares for them? You get my point?

Free Mattress Program

We can’t help everyone, but we will try to help as many as we could. Thus, we decided to launch the “Free Mattress Program”

You can view the full details here, Free Mattress Program. But in short, this is how it goes.

We will give away one mattress every week for as long as we can afford. The mattress given away would either Single, Super Single or Queen Size, depending on the requirement of the individual. It will be a brand new mattress.

To apply for the “Free Mattress Program”, fill up the form with all the fields required . We will review all the applicants, do background checks and choose the successful applicant base on who needs the mattress most.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that most of the people needing the mattress will not be internet savvy and wouldn’t be able to apply for this program themselves. We will depend mostly on referrals to keep this program successful. So, this is where we need your help – If you do come across anyone who you think will benefit from this program, please fill up the same form found here, Free Mattress Program.

I will empahsis strongly here : This program is for Singapore’s poor and needy. This is a Charity program. Do not spam us with fake stories. We cannot afford to spend time trying to sort out the the non-genuine cases from the genuine ones, if anyone starts spamming us with fake applicants, this program will fail.

So let’s do our part to help make Singapore a better place.
