Warning: Your Mattress Might be Costing Your Health
How long is the warranty of your mattress? 10 years? 15 years? 30 years? If you are expecting your mattress to last through the warranty period, be prepared for the bad news, a mattress shouldn’t be used for more than 5-7 years!
Much as we’d like to believe that the expensive mattress we bought would last a lifetime or at least the warranty period, the reality is entirely the opposite. Mattresses have to be changed way before it reaches the warranty expiration date for reasons none other than … Your Health! (mattress warranties do not cover that)
Our bodies sweat every night, night after night. Irrespective of the mattress cover, a small percentage of the sweat finds its way into the mattress. The moisture itself is a breeding ground for all kinds of germs and bacteria. On top of that, our bodies also shed off dead skin and other bodily fluid, and this in turn becomes a source of food for bed bugs and dustmites.
If you have not changed your mattress for the past 10 years, immediately head out to your nearest ikea/courts/harveynorman or visit our online mattress store to buy a new one!

How To Make Your Bedroom Cooler Without The Use Of Aircon
It seems that the heat in Singapore is ever getting hotter, and electricity bills are shooting record high due to our unrelenting use of the Air-Con.
Here are some tips that would help keep our rooms cooler and electricity bills lower.
Use curtains in lighter hues like neutral colors, white, beige, subtle brown, subtle pastel colors etc. These light colored curtains will reflect the light out falling on them from outside. This will keep your room naturally cool without having to turn on your ACs or coolers. On the other hand, dark colored curtains have larger tendencies to absorb and allow the heat to enter in the room making it hot throughout the day. In case, you are hell bent on buying a dark colored curtain as it matches the color of your furniture, then, stick foil paper on the side of the curtain which is exposed to sun so as to reflect maximum rays possible.
Usage of ceiling fans instead of an aircon or cooler in every room will fetch you a 40 % fall in the total electric energy consumed Click to Continue Reading

7 Useful Tips on Decorating Bedrooms
A few tips to help make things a lot easier for you as you go about the business of decorating your bedroom.
1) It is not what you keep but how you keep it. Bedrooms can have the cheapest furniture and accessories, but that too can look beautiful if placed right and coordinated in an appealing manner. The look of openness with bright sunlight seeping in during the day makes the bedroom cheerful and bright, instead of dull and morose.
2) Clutter free bedrooms should be the aim, since clutter makes the room messy and unkempt, it detracts from the feeling of comfort and warmth and prevents the free flow of positive energy. Above all, clutter leaves little space to sit or lie down. Adequate storage is important but this need not be in the form of giant sized wardrobes. It can also be created in dressers and chests to break the monotony of the room.Ornate beds look beautiful but the size of the bedroom must be borne in mind before ordering the bed, lest they be so huge as to dwarf the room with their size and leave no space to even move about.
3) Placing mirrors in the bedroom is not just auspicious but mirrors also create the illusion of space and make the room look bigger.
4) Comforters and bedspreads in coordinated colors with soothing prints enhance the elegance of he bedroom.
Lighting of the master bedroom must bring warmth by being neither too much nor too dim which may make visibility a problem.
5) Freshly painted bedrooms bring a clean and pleasing look that make the bedroom more inviting. Lighter colors soothe the occupants more.
6) The flooring of the bedroom also has a role to play in its ambience. Lighter short pile carpets and rugs add to the décor and give a greater aesthetic appeal to the room.
7) Display of artwork, decoration pieces like crystal vases, hand painted ceramics, beautifully framed family pictures and other attractive pieces add character to the room. However, too many decorative items will make the place excessively done up and become less appealing.
Implementing these suggestions is easy and the end result will make it worth the effort put in, with a master bedroom that may become paradise for the occupants.

Here’s A Quick Way To Change The Look Of Your Bedroom
Don’t you feel the bare floors in your bedroom make your room appear plain and incomplete? When you enter your room doesn’t it seem that something is not quite right, but cannot pinpoint what? Rooms need an infusion of warmth and color, which comes from rugs placed on the bedroom floor. Plain or with designs, rugs and carpets bring freshness into the room and make it more welcoming than the cold and bare floors. Depending on the size of free floor space, small or large, one or more rugs can transform the appearance of the bedroom.
Rugs and carpets come in many designs and qualities and can fit into every budget. The choice of rugs then has to be between pastel plains that will complement any type of furniture, abstract cottons that go well with wrought iron or bamboo furniture in the bedroom, or floral designs in silk or wool that enhance the beauty of Victorian or other ornate and carved wooden furniture, in teak, mahogany or rosewood. The general rule for bedroom rugs and carpets is to opt for soft pile ones or other soft carpets since heavy footwear is unlikely to be used within the room. Devoid of carpets, the furniture seems incomplete and simply placed on the floor, while a carpet gives a new elegance to the seating arrangement.
Rugs add to the luxurious feeling about a room, and it is blissful to put one’s feet on a soft rug instead of the hard, cold floor. The feeling could be extended to the whole room with a wall-to-wall carpet, or one or more smaller carpets. These could be placed in the center of a larger open space in the room, beside the bed and under a center table between a sofa set or a set of chairs, if any. Without a carpet the whole room looks like a field without grass, while a carpet infuses a feeling of welcoming warmth.
Rugs can also be used for sitting and playing games with children. They are preferable to sitting on the bare floor when a larger space is needed for puzzles or other games. They enhance the feeling of warmth in the room. Many people love to sit on the floor all the time on floor cushions or on the rug itself and find it more relaxing than any chair. Sitting on the floor without a rug is an uncomfortably cold experience, while sitting on a rug is extremely comfortable.
Contemporary interior designing is all about minimalist furnishings. However bare and minimal the furniture might be, a carpet makes the décor complete, complementing the furniture and other accessories. The rug or carpet is the neutralizing feature between drapes, bedspreads, cushions, seating and the floor.
Carpets are like a sounding board, that absorb the sound of footsteps, cushion every fall and damage, and also reduce the noise by absorbing the loud sounds as well. Thus little ones do not get hurt even if they fall and any breakable object falling does not break on the soft carpet.
Thus the carpet whether one or more, make the room a comfort zone that is beautiful and elegant. They help to unify the combination of colors that are used for the décor in the room. Lighter carpets add to the brightness and darker ones absorb the dirt and stains, which might be too conspicuous on a lighter one.

What Everybody Ought to Know About Mattress Care
Mattress care is neither cumbersome nor time consuming. It can simply become part of the regular cleaning regimen followed at home. The initial phase makes it appear like an added headache, but soon it blends into the household routine. All that mattresses need to be able to last long and well are a few simple measures like:
1) Place the mattress on a strong, firm base. This ensures that the mattress remains unshaken and does not sag with the curve of a base that cannot withstand the weight of the mattress.
2) The new mattress must be allowed to breathe for sometime after it has been removed from its plastic wrapping. This helps in removing the odor of newness that is typically found in foam products encased in plastic sheets for sometime.
3) Before being installed on the bed a washable, absorbent cover must be placed over the mattress. This will keep the mattress permanently clean and any spilling or stains will soil the cover and not the mattress. The cover being removable can be washed and placed again.
4) The mattress of even the finest quality like latex or memory foam must be flipped occasionally. This will help preserve its evenness on top and the whole mattress will stay firm.
5) Regular dusting and weekly vacuum cleaning of the mattress is recommended to prevent dust from settling on it. This will also ensure that dust mites never enter the mattress.
6) Mattresses must be free from moisture and therefore wet things must never be placed on them.
Mattresses do tend to absorb moisture during seasons when humidity levels are high. This may lead to fungal growths and discoloring. The best preventive for this is sunlight. Therefore, the mattresses must be kept under direct sunlight once a month or more if it is not too cumbersome a task. This will extract all the moisture and also kill any germs present.
7) While water must be avoided on mattresses any stains appearing on the mattress can be cleaned with mild but effective detergent and then cleaned with a wet cloth. This will keep the mattress spotlessly clean for years to come. The only word of caution here is that any wet exposure to the bed must be followed by proper drying to remove all traces of moisture from the mattress.
Mattresses may seem solid and tough but they serve a specific purpose of providing restful sleep. They must not be used as play areas or trampolines to be jumped on or as bouncing pads. This would damage the inner layers of the mattress and shorten their life.
9) Mattresses are meant to be stored flat and must never be folded, since folding will compress the inner layers and stretch the outer ones, causing irreparable damage.

5 Great Tips For Bedroom Storage
The bedroom is one part of the house exclusively meant for stress free activities, and must provide the perfect ambience for de-stressing the tired occupants who have a hectic pace of life. The bedroom décor is a matter of personal choice, but then no matter what one’s preferences are, they must never be overpowering and garish.
Bedrooms must exude softer feelings of warmth, freshness and brightness, to be able to soothe the nerves and have a calming influence. It is therefore, important to have the right things in the right place in the bedroom.
While designing and decorating the bedroom it is important to remember the purpose it serves, and not confuse its functioning which can easily be accomplished in other parts of the house. Space is a scarce commodity doubtlessly in modern apartments and HDBs but it can be utilized in a manner that does not convert bedrooms into storerooms. This does not mean that nothing must be kept in bedrooms and that they must be clear.
The implication is to have the right balance of storage, aesthetic appeal and serenity. The following tips would help to create the right ambience, use space economically without giving the appearance of clutter, confusion and chaos:
1.Use space under the beds: Beds occupy a significant part of the bedroom, and the space under them lies idle and invites dust and dirt. It would be ideal if the space could be used efficiently.
2.Not too many closets but efficient use of space: Too many closets in the bedroom would seem overpowering, therefore it is preferable to have fewer in number with the potential of maximizing their storage with hanging space, shelves and drawers to fill in empty spaces.
3.Leave empty floor space but vertical space can be effectively utilized: Apartments generally have limited floor space to offer. Therefore the idea of keeping chests of drawers, dressers and cabinets on the floor would make the room congested with limited space to move about. It would give the appearance of an over crowded over furnished room, that is so unappealing. But there is lots of space open and available till the ceiling. While cabinets till the ceiling may not look attractive, there is no harm in having shelves and drawers that can be fitted on walls behind the beds, over the window and so on.
4.Create a loft- A loft is an overhead storage are that is constructed over the ceiling. This is done by effectively having a false ceiling and space between that and the real ceiling being used for storage with access from an inconspicuous door from the bedroom. This offers ample space for bags and suitcases, hammocks and holiday equipment, old books and toys that cannot be parted with just yet.
5.Customize TV cabinets and hide shelves behind the mirror- The TV is now an essential gadget in every bedroom. While wall mounted sets are popular, many people prefer having TV cabinets. These can be customized to have additional storage space as part of the design and can be used for keeping odds and ends. Additional space can be created by adding narrow shelves behind the mirror of the dresser for keeping small things that cannot be thrown.
All these tips would help to make he bedroom look clear and open, bright and warm rather than a store full of things ready to fall on the occupants.

Start by throwing away all the old, used things like watches, clocks, bottles of perfume and creams, stationery and mail, dairies and journals, clothes and jewellery. Sentimental stuff kept for years is just a comfort to watch as it adds to the mess without any other contribution, and hence needs to be given away.
