5 Great Tips For Bedroom Storage
The bedroom is one part of the house exclusively meant for stress free activities, and must provide the perfect ambience for de-stressing the tired occupants who have a hectic pace of life. The bedroom décor is a matter of personal choice, but then no matter what one’s preferences are, they must never be overpowering and garish.
Bedrooms must exude softer feelings of warmth, freshness and brightness, to be able to soothe the nerves and have a calming influence. It is therefore, important to have the right things in the right place in the bedroom.
While designing and decorating the bedroom it is important to remember the purpose it serves, and not confuse its functioning which can easily be accomplished in other parts of the house. Space is a scarce commodity doubtlessly in modern apartments and HDBs but it can be utilized in a manner that does not convert bedrooms into storerooms. This does not mean that nothing must be kept in bedrooms and that they must be clear.
The implication is to have the right balance of storage, aesthetic appeal and serenity. The following tips would help to create the right ambience, use space economically without giving the appearance of clutter, confusion and chaos:
1.Use space under the beds: Beds occupy a significant part of the bedroom, and the space under them lies idle and invites dust and dirt. It would be ideal if the space could be used efficiently.
2.Not too many closets but efficient use of space: Too many closets in the bedroom would seem overpowering, therefore it is preferable to have fewer in number with the potential of maximizing their storage with hanging space, shelves and drawers to fill in empty spaces.
3.Leave empty floor space but vertical space can be effectively utilized: Apartments generally have limited floor space to offer. Therefore the idea of keeping chests of drawers, dressers and cabinets on the floor would make the room congested with limited space to move about. It would give the appearance of an over crowded over furnished room, that is so unappealing. But there is lots of space open and available till the ceiling. While cabinets till the ceiling may not look attractive, there is no harm in having shelves and drawers that can be fitted on walls behind the beds, over the window and so on.
4.Create a loft- A loft is an overhead storage are that is constructed over the ceiling. This is done by effectively having a false ceiling and space between that and the real ceiling being used for storage with access from an inconspicuous door from the bedroom. This offers ample space for bags and suitcases, hammocks and holiday equipment, old books and toys that cannot be parted with just yet.
5.Customize TV cabinets and hide shelves behind the mirror- The TV is now an essential gadget in every bedroom. While wall mounted sets are popular, many people prefer having TV cabinets. These can be customized to have additional storage space as part of the design and can be used for keeping odds and ends. Additional space can be created by adding narrow shelves behind the mirror of the dresser for keeping small things that cannot be thrown.
All these tips would help to make he bedroom look clear and open, bright and warm rather than a store full of things ready to fall on the occupants.

De Clutter Your Bedroom!
Bedrooms are places for rest, recreation and relaxation, but often give the appearance of a storeroom with things lying around or even falling all over. Walking into a bedroom like that would really contribute to stress without realizing. Order, and a clutter free room, soothes the nerves and acts as a balm to the exhausted mind. Few people realize the need for a clutter free room that the bedroom ought to be.
The importance of a clutter free room cannot be stressed enough and it requires a lot of initial effort. Soon it will become a way of life, but the first step is difficult since it needs time and energy. If you look at happier people you will find that they do have de-cluttered bedrooms, and if that is an inspiration, it is time to take the plunge.
Start by throwing away all the old, used things like watches, clocks, bottles of perfume and creams, stationery and mail, dairies and journals, clothes and jewellery. Sentimental stuff kept for years is just a comfort to watch as it adds to the mess without any other contribution, and hence needs to be given away.
Once the bedroom has been de-cluttered, it will look so open and large with positive energies flowing freely now that they have got the space to meander through the room. This will improve sleep, help in relaxing more and bring a lot of optimism back into your lives.

First Mattress Given Under Free Mattress Program
We have given away our first mattress under our Free Mattress Program. We had 7 applicants since the launch of the program on the 20th July. The applicants who were not selected could reapply for next week’s free mattress.
I would like to thank all those who had helped this program. You will be glad to know that at least 1 Singaporean’s life would be better every week…..
I would also like to thank the person who had applied on the applicant’s behalf.
Below is the applicant’s story, through the words of his friend. (I had changed the names, as I do not wish any uneccessary inconvenience brought to the applicant through this program)
Dear beds.sg, I am applying for a chance to give my friend, John Lee, an opportunity to have a better living condition.
Background of John Lee and his family: He is soon to be 21st on 30th August. Currently serving full-time NS, he only gets pathetic allowance from the SAF and still has a long way till ORD in Sep-2010. His mom passed away, leaving him with his ageing dad and an elder brother. His dad and brother were not employed currently, with his dad staying in the 3-room flat (2 bedrooms + 1 living room) most of the time.
Current situation: John was very reluctant to invite people to his house. I am considered the “lucky” few to have stepped in. I took the chance on CNY when i said that i wanted to pay a visit to his dad. He agreed. To my horror (actually he already told me his house was in a mess before i went), never did i expect that it could be 100X worst than i thought.
His house was TOTALLY overwhelmed with piles and piles of poster rolls stacked up in his house. I was dumbfounded and instantly went into a state of shock the moment he opened the door. The living room was left with a very small walkway leading to his bedroom. That’s not the end. His room and kitchen was filled with those things too!! Horrendous. Needless to say, his whole house was filled with a stench, but i never had the courage to tell him that his house reeks.
The problem is, if this is sort of House Makeover Show by Mediacorp, John could probably have a high chance of getting it. But as a friend of his, i really wish that he could at least have a basic, nice and comfortable bed to sleep on every night when he book out from NS.
John’s room was shared with his brother. Right now, he sleeps on a small Di-Lum that is laid on the floor, while his brother takes the .. filthy bed. Speaking of those “stuffs”, they were brought home by his brother and left in the house, accumulating throughout the years. I really pity John. I once asked him to tell his brother to throw away those stuffs, but he said those are not his and he couldn’t do anything about it.
The other room used by his dad was kind of ajar that day. His dad didn’t want me to peek into it. He was too embarrassed i guessed. It was all his brother’s doings that made the whole house into such state. I believe neither John nor his dad could talk his brother out.
Ending Statement: What i wish for here, as a friend of John, to let him have a bed of his, or a mattress so he won’t have to sleep on Di Lums anymore. At least once he gets a brand new bed/mattress, he and his family could do a bit of spring cleaning and can finally have a sound sleep at night.
I really cannot believe John is living in such a condition. I have NEVER come across someone’s house that is so so so bad, until i saw his. His friend Jane Tan could probably verify my statement although i have no idea who she is. Her contacts was provided by John.
I found this website while surfing and decided to give it a shot. I have actually consulted John’s permission before participating but i did not show him my submission. I also understand that beds.sg is only giving out free mattress for awarded applicants. Perhaps a plan can be made if he is really chosen.
His house is totally in a mess. But it may require alot of work for them. I am not asking for much. For John, or for his 21st birthday gift, i hope i have done my part. Thank you.

Free Mattress Program, The Story Behind
During the initial launch of Beds.sg, 2 years ago, our company infrastructure wasn’t that stable yet. Every now and then, there will be hiccups here and there with our delivery team. As a result, I was spending at least 2 days per week helping out the delivery team. Yes, physically delivering the mattresses and beds myself. And, yes… it is tough work
But, well… I learnt alot.
As you might know, if you purchased from us before, we provide free mattress disposal service. In other words, when you buy a mattress from us, we will help you dispose your old one. And, this is where the whole story begins….
A good number of mattress I (physically) dispose of were full of bed bugs. I testify that bed bugs are one of the most digusting things on this planet. The mattresses that were infected by bed bugs have a really bad smell, they produce a kind of odour. I can’t really describe the smell but it is a basically a mixture of dried blood combined with faeces from the bed bugs. Anyway, the point is…. it is just plain gross.
A lot of mattress, which I dispose during that time were badly deformed and out of shape. Some even had springs poking out.
Then, it dawned unto me that might be extremely poor people around who are using this kind of mattresses and are unable to afford new ones. Look at the prices at mattresses out there, it cost minimum a few hundred to thousands of dollars.
I am sure, my fellow Singaporeans, you have seen on TV or knew people who are so poor that sometimes they rather skip a meal to set aside money for their rent or for their childrens school fees or for the medical fees of their loved ones. Now, tell me, how the hell are they going to afford a new mattress?
The irony of all, an unhygenic mattress will cause them to be ill more often, then, on top of their already very bad situation, they probably have to skip seeing the doctor. Or skip more meals because they can’t go to work. You get what I am driving at? The poor gets poorer so as the saying goes…..
How about the ederly in our country, a number of them who are depending social welfare, you think they got the money to get a new mattress? I once delivered a mattress to an elderly gentleman whom stays alone, the mattress was ordered by his son who stays elswhere. The mattress the elderly was sleeping on was unusable, disgusting to the max. Any strong healthy person sleeping on that mattress will get sick! Now, my point is, this elderly guy had a son, his son bought him a new mattress, how about those that do not have children who cares for them? You get my point?

To apply for the “Free Mattress Program”, fill up the form with all the fields required . We will review all the applicants, do background checks and choose the successful applicant base on who needs the mattress most.

So, this is where we need your help – If you do come across anyone who you think will benefit from this program, please fill up the same form found here, Free Mattress Program.

7 Common Pitfalls of Bedroom Design to Avoid
A bedroom is a private place for rest, relaxation, recreation and refreshing yourself. It is place where we can dare to be ourselves without any pretensions meant for the world outside. Hence it is important that the bedroom not only keeps with one’s tastes and preferences, but with additional aesthetic appeal that provides a calm, soothing environment.
We have found at least 7 very common pitfalls of bedroom designs that detract from the very purpose of the bedroom, leaving the occupant ill at ease and not comfortable the way he would like to be. Avoiding the following would help in creating a better designed bedroom:
1.Lack of natural sunlight and ventilation: Modern designs seek to incorporate mood lighting and air conditioning, without realizing how important it is to have some amount of sunlight entering the room at least during the early hours of the day. Natural ventilation is healthier than artificial sources, and therefore the bedroom must benefit from both.
2.Loud and overly bright colors: Many a time people feel that bright colors will brighten their lives. Unfortunately, they may just prove to be burdensome and not in the least relaxing. Colors selected for the bedroom must but comforting and calming. The three S’s of bedroom color include sedate, soothing and stylish. These may be found in shades of ivory, cool blues or similar lighter hues.
3.Bedrooms need a plan beyond beds: Most people believe that the bedroom needs beds and little else. But bedrooms would be incomplete without space, storage, seating and accessories. A proper plan for the bedroom must be drawn of course with beds as the most important but must include the other essentials.
4.Storage-too much or too little: Storage proves to be taken in extremes in many bedrooms. Often people do not provide for adequate storage and later on find the room cluttered with things that have no place to be stored in. The other extreme is people who wish to see clear rooms and make overpowering wardrobes that dwarf the room, making the bedroom look cramped.
5.Space mania with beds in a corner: It is not unusual to find people wanting free space to move about in the bedroom and therefore place beds against the wall in a corner, forcing one partner to crawl onto the bed. This is perhaps the least desirable placement for beds meant for two people. Beds must be accessible from both sides.
6.Indifference to ceilings: We wake up each morning with our eyes turned upwards towards the ceiling-a pleasing ceiling would be a great way to start the day. This however, is the most ignored part of the bedroom.
7.Lack of adequate seating: Bedrooms are no longer just sleeping rooms. It is a good idea to have comfortable seating for at least two or more people rather than having to use the bed to sit forcibly and uncomfortably.

3 SureFire Ways to Help You Sleep Better
Believe it or not, how we go through our day to day activities can cause us to have difficulty sleeping at night and eventually develop a disorder called insomnia.
More and more people are sufferring from insonmia these days, and the reason behind most cases of insonmia is related to the type of work we do. As our work gets less physically demanding and requiring more and more mental work, insomnia starts creeping into our lives.
If you suffer from insonmia, even if you sleep in the best mattress in the world, you will still have insonmia. So forget about the the fanciful mattresses that cost thousands of dollars promising you a better sleep.
Here are 3 tips to help you sleep better -
Tip #1: Make it a habit to sleep and wake up around the same time each day. Changing the time you sleep and wake up will leave you feeling languid and sluggish for the rest of the day. Constant changing of your sleeping patterns can make it eventually difficult for your body to sleep at certain times of the night, ultimately resulting in development of insomnia.
Tip #2: Don’t eat too much during dinner and avoid supper. How do you expect to sleep well when your digestive system is working hard?
Tip #3: Schedule your exercise regimens during the afternoon. After working out, your blood continues to flow more freely throughout your body, causing your heartbeat to increase. As a result, you feel energized and the sleeping pattern is disrupted.
These 3 tips should help 100 times more than getting a top of the range mattress. If you would like to read up further on more ways to batte Insonmia read 9 Ways to Conquer Insomnia

5 Facts you should know about sleep and fitness
Sleep affects our health. This is a fact that we all know.
Lack of sleep will affect our concentration, resulting in mistakes in work. And also cause a hazard if we travel on the road frequently.
You can stay fit and healthy by exercising and keeping a proper diet. But, do you know that lack of sleep will ruin our fitness plan and deem all our hard work in exercising futile?
We are honored to have Mr. Winston Liow, an established personal trainer of more than 10 years to contribute an article on this subject.
Mr. Liow suggested in this article that for those who are frequent visitors to the gym, if you are not getting enough quality sleep, you will soon find your gym membership fees gone to drain.
The article is titled Sleep and Fitness.
If you are not getting a good night’s sleep, is it because the mattress too old or too soft? Is the pillow too flat? did you had caffeine earlier? Find out and change what you can, because sleep affects us in more ways that we can imagine.

Do Not Underestimate the Importance of Your Bedroom Colour
Studies have proved that colours affect the mood of a person. Colours have a psychological effect and are instrumental in communicating emotions, inspiring, soothing, and energizing. Therefore, the colour of your bedroom walls affects your daily mood.
Some colours will make your room warm and cosy, whereas some can make your room calm and soothing.
I personally don’t think it is neccesary to engage a Feng Shui Expert to decide the colours for you. But, I feel it is important that you have a basic understanding of what colours will give what kind of effect. You should decide first, what kind of mood you would like have for your room. Then second, choose the colours that will give that effect.
This article, Bedroom Wall Colours and How It Affects Your Mood will help you have a better understanding of the different types of room colours and its effects on your general day to day mood.
